I recently had a really big surprise on safari which I just
have to share! We had been on safari for only a few minutes, when we came
across a lone Buffalo bull. On him was the real surprise. This bird specializes
on feeding on ticks taken from large ungulate mammals. A Yellow-billed
Oxpecker!
It’s estimated that there only 500 of these birds in the
Greater Kruger National Park, so this was something incredibly special. They
were extinct in the Kruger National Park for 64 years and made a surprise
re-appearance in the 1960’s. Found mostly only in the northern parts of the Kruger
National Park, it’s good to see them moving further south.
This is quite a find! I’m keeping my eyes and ears open for
more sightings!
